Glass – What is that?

Glass is the first synthetic material – discovered thousand of years ago, so goes the legend. Probably people sitting around a campfire on a beach discovered that the sand and other materials which happened to be in the area had melted and formed a primitive kind of glass.

For modern colored "Stained Glass", however, we need more that accidentally melted sand.

The most colored flat glass comes from the USA, and the formulae for the mixing of each color are well-kept secrets in each glass factory.

There is transparent colored "Cathedral Glass" for windows and "suncatchers", translucent "Opalescent Glass"  for lampshades and illuminated objects of art, and the handmade "Replicate Glass" which is used for true-to-original reproductions of Tiffany Lampshades, which looks exactly like the original opalescent glass that the famous glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany fabricated in his glass factories in New York more than a hundred years ago.
