Lapidary

The word "Lapidary" means having to do with gems and minerals.  But also the person who works with gems and minerals is known as a Lapidary.

Using lapidary techniques you can fabricate round, oval or free-form "cabochons" – ground and polished jewels – from mineral slabs.

Cabochons are smooth jewels which are made from beautiful slices colored minerals. Normally the lower side is flat and the upper side is rounded or domed.

The grinding and polishing of mineral jewels emphasizes their structures and shimmering colors, making them most suitable for decorative jewelry.
